Assistant Professor of Medicine Practice, Indiana University School of Medicine
Palliative Medicine Consultant, Indiana University North Hospital
Dr. Douglas Tannas practices palliative medicine for IU Health, primarily spending his time on inpatient consults to support patients and families who are facing serious decisions about life-limiting illness. A native Hoosier, Doug completed medical school at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and returned to Indiana for a residency in emergency medicine. He spent a decade and a half practicing in IU's rural and suburban emergency departments. A longstanding interest in spirituality and end-of-life care led him to complete a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at IU.
In addition to his clinical role, Doug remains involved in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, and he enjoys participating in the Evans Center's multidisciplinary meetings. Outside of work, he has served on the vestry of his Episcopal church, where he and his wife are organists/pianists, providing liturgical music weekly. Doug has been an active volunteer with his children's high school band program and in his local Kiwanis Club. He plays contrabass in the Madison County Community Orchestra and enjoys tinkering with vintage bicycles and clocks.
